Damoon – A Korean Handcrafted Tableware Collection
Each of the pieces, which reference the moon and it’s various states, are made from resilient and long lasting materials, such as Korean brass, Yughee, and a special Korean lacquer called Ott-chill.
Yughee is a copper and tin alloy with high heat transfer properties (i.e. it can heat up, or cool down quickly), and has been used by Korean royal and noble families because of it’s aesthetic characteristics. Moreover, Yughee also changes colour when it enters in contact toxic ingredients, turning black and warning the person that food may be unsuitable for consumption.
Ott-chill is a type of Korean lacquer which derives from the secretions of the ott-tree. The process of collecting the material in it’s natural state is highly complicated, and required expert knowledge and experience. What makes this material even more special is it’s colour and texture, and resilience to scratches and wear. It is often considered the very best tableware material in other Asian countries such as Japan and China.
